A classic sign of narcissism is a lack of empathy. Narcissists generally don’t care about your feelings or the feelings of others, although they may sometimes pretend to. For example, if you’re going through a difficult time, perhaps you’ve lost a loved one or are experiencing a health issue, they won’t offer genuine support. Instead, they’ll turn the situation around to focus on themselves, seeking sympathy for how your challenges are affecting them.
Narcissists also have a hard time admitting they were wrong. They must always appear to be right, even if everyone can plainly see they are wrong. They’ll fight tooth and nail to keep control and demean your ideas so you don’t think your ideas count.
If you find your partner always needs attention and validation, then it may be another indicator. Some narcissists are social butterflies and do not wish to see someone else as the center of attention, rather than themselves. Other types, such as covert narcissists, will behave covertly but become jealous when other individuals are in the center of attention.
One of the signs is a preoccupation with image, either their body image or their public image. They can spend hours getting ready, get annoyed if you take too long, or imply that no one has ever wanted to know how you look. They may be concerned about their public image, and you notice things that do not equate with the empathetic, socially favorable image they project.
