Number 5: “You’re just being too sensitive.”
This is one of the narcissist’s stock lines, and it’s even manipulative. Why? Because to tell someone, “You’re just too sensitive,” is a way of making you question your feelings and reactions. They’re trying to make you believe that you’re the issue and not what’s going on. They may even phrase it in such a way that you never even realize what they’ve done. For instance, they may tell you the worst things and add a “Ha! ” to the end of it. To you, it may look like they’re joking at first glance.
But in the real world, they’re testing to determine whether you’re fine with what they’ve said and how much they can get away with. If you call them out on it, that “Ha!” suddenly becomes something you have to have misheard because you’re too sensitive. Again, all about presenting themselves as being the issue, not them.
