Narcissism 101

5 Signs a Narcissist is Deeply Suffering Inside

Number 2: Always on the Run

They’re perpetually running from something they can’t quite figure out. There is one weird thing you will notice with all these narcissists: they never actually get to the end. Ever. There is no “enough” for them in their lexicon. There is no endpoint, only diversion. They can’t just sit and be; they seem to be fleeing a monster. And the bizarre part is, they are that monster that’s within them. It’s not even a matter of working themselves to death or trying to prove they can do it. Even when they have a successful business or career, they won’t shut their laptops at 5:00 p.m.

They won’t stop. They will pursue more validation, more commerce, more likes, more opulence, and more visibility. One car doesn’t do it. One house doesn’t do it. Ten compliments? No, they require more. Their appetite is unquenchable; it is like a bottomless pit they continue to try and fill with status, success, and stuff they do not have but desire. The more they get, the emptier they become, though. This is what true endless suffering tastes and appears like. They’re not creating a life; they are fleeing from a vacuum, a bottomless pit to fill.

They suffer from a disease of “next,” the next project, the next shiny thing, and the next perfection. They look over the horizon and ask, “Why does their life appear greener than mine?” Instead of watering their soil, they tire themselves aping everyone else. They don’t live; they chase. They do it relentlessly, and that’s destroying them. My dad is the best example of this. Even at the age of 60, he still turns up in various exams to receive an increase in his salary.
