What to do: Hold your ground. Don’t let them work to bring you back in. Remember why you went no contact in the first place. Emotional manipulation is one of their strongest weapons, and knowing it is your best defense.
Number 2. They ramp up their tactics
Once the sweet words fail, narcissists will escalate their attempts. They will repeatedly call and send text messages, come to your place uninvited, or inundate you on social media with posts. Their goal is to overwhelm you and get you to throw in the towel.
What to do: Do not answer. Block their social media profiles and phone number, if necessary. If they resort to harassment, don’t hesitate to use legal recourse in your defense. Narcissists live on drama, and blocking them completely deprives them of the fuel they need.
Number 3. They Start a Smear Campaign (Triangulation)
One of the worst things narcissists do is attempt to isolate you by lying to mutual friends, family, or acquaintances about you. This is a common tactic, known as triangulation, that can cause you to feel guilty, excluded, or insane and is usually the central point of their discard process.
What to do: Stay calm. It’s natural to feel like defending yourself, but getting drawn into the drama will only help further their agenda. Instead, focus on maintaining your intimate, trusted relationships. Real friends will be able to see through the narcissist’s lies, and the smear campaign will run out of steam eventually.
