The problem is that this emotion needs humanity, connections, and a soul, which a narcissist lacks. This is the one feeling that uncovers them fully. Only a true empath can experience it. Predators can never feel it.
Emotions are viewed as a transactional process for them and not as something real. Any emotion that a narcissist shows has its reasons and motivations. However, this emotion has nothing to do with any transaction, agenda, or control. It is a product of pure depth that a narcissist lacks.

It is obvious that when observing a narcissist carefully, one may notice that they can pretend being kind, charming, empathic, admiring, excited, sad even – if it is needed for them. Their acting skills are superb since they learn human emotions as a language. They imitate what they have observed from other people. They watch your expressions and tone of voice to make you believe in their sincerity.
However, this particular emotion unmasks their acting – this is gratitude. It is gratitude because it implies recognizing goodness outside the self. It means accepting the fact that somebody has contributed to your well-being. For the narcissist, such admission is like death. They can say “thank you,” but they will never feel it.
