Number 1: They make you stay late and necessitate unplanned work.
This is not accidental mayhem; this is deliberate sabotage with the sole purpose of attacking your credibility. Their end purpose is to have others by others, I mean your peers, friends, or anyone who’s counting on you, to see you as irresponsible, messy, late, or lazy.
How do they do it, you wonder? Through a manipulative tactic called feigned disability, a tactic well beyond instrumented incompetence. They feign helplessness, totally unable to perform the most basic things, and you are their hero.
They will hang onto your assistance at the most inconvenient moment. You are going into the washroom; out of nowhere, they need you or need the child to perform something. You have to cut short whatever it is that you are doing. You do not take a shower; you jump in to save the day.
You get bogged down in a string of what seem like tiny chores that quickly escalate into tidal waves of responsibilities. You may be ironing their shirt at the last minute, cooking breakfast they could have easily cooked themselves, or hunting around for things they have intentionally misplaced.
Each task, in itself, is not a big deal, but put together, it’s a hill of stress. By the time you can leave your home, you are in your head and emotionally drained. Your tardiness to work or appointments disorients and makes you nervous. This is something that the narcissist gets a kick from.
They fully comprehend how being tardy stains your image, thereby indirectly confirming your self-doubt and diminishing your self-esteem. Their twisted pleasure is watching your embarrassment and anguish as you navigate through the intricacies of your orchestrated morning chaos.
