Why Narcissists Don’t Regret Hurting You
First, let’s address the fact that narcissists are rarely, if ever, genuinely sorry. Their apologies are insincere and usually serve only as a means to an end. The only thing they’re sorry about is being exposed or having to come up with a new strategy to manipulate you. In this article, I’ll explain some of the reasons why narcissists never truly apologize.
To narcissists, regardless of what damage they have inflicted, they can justify, minimize, or deny it, as if it never happened. They do not take responsibility for the pain and damage they have caused, with no place for remorse over how they treated other people. However, others have discovered that an apology can bring down people’s defenses, restore trust, and open up more access to manipulation. Narcissists have also perfected the art of apologizing, making it another game of who can be the most sincere.
For most narcissists, even if asked on the day they die whether they regret anything, they will reply no. To admit they do would be to admit a failure or mistake, and narcissists dislike losing. They prefer to squander their time gossiping about others’ inadequacies, complaining about how others let them down or betrayed them, or how they were never able to get someone who appreciated them. As per them, they treated all equally well, but others were not able to recognize their value.
