Number 2: Secret Stashes of Cash

Stacks of money crammed into pipes, safe spots, and never spent on you. Narcissists don’t merely adore money; they adore money with adoration, but not in a manner that breeds industriousness or savings habits. Money turns into their private reservoir of emotional power, and you will never be permitted in the vicinity. They will appear to be broke all day long. They’ll tell you, “Oh, the bills are too much,” they’ll sigh and say they’re sacrificing a lot, and they’re the poorest person alive. Meanwhile, they’re holding piles of money in the weirdest and disturbing places, just to keep it away from you.

My father used to do it all the time, and I’m not talking about hiding money in drawers. I mean, hiding cash literally in holes in the wall, cellophane wrapping it, and pushing it down inside bathroom drains, just so that he wouldn’t have to give it to us. One time, he opened one of these stashes, and guess what? He found that the money had spoiled. Water had seeped in; it was no good.

And the only thing he could think about that day was, he would rather lose every penny he had than hand it over to the people who reside in his home. That’s when I completely understood the hunger he had for money. It was all about ownership. It wasn’t greed; it was punishment, a soft-spoken claim of, “You will always owe me.”. I will always possess more than you, and I will die before I elevate you.
