Celebrating Success: A Narcissist’s Curse

You could be standing there with an Olympic medal in your hand, and that narcissist will find a way to feel superior to you or, worse, they will find a way to destroy that moment for you. Not because they want the medal more than that, but they can’t stand the feeling of being small next to someone else’s joy. That is the truth. They do not just envy your success; they resent your light. A narcissist is cursed to always feel like a failure, no matter what they achieve.

And the reason is simple: they do not have a real self to validate them from the inside. Their entire identity is built on comparison, so no matter how far they go, how much they accomplish, or how hard they work to be seen as the best, they are constantly measuring themselves against everyone around them, and it’s never enough. They suffer from a sickness of the soul called the “grass is greener” syndrome.

If you are happy, they are miserable. If you are growing, they feel left behind. If you shine, they feel exposed. Even if you are someone they once claimed to love, they cannot tolerate your wins because your growth reminds them of everything they are not and cannot be. That’s why they downplay your achievements. That’s why they mock your dreams. That’s why they act bored when something beautiful happens in your life. But it does not stop with that.

When envy festers long enough inside a narcissist, it turns into something a lot darker: vindictiveness. They don’t just want what you have; they want to destroy what you have built. If they cannot take it from you, they will try to burn it to the ground. I’ve seen this happen so many times. People finally escape, start healing, find success, and the narcissist comes back not to reconnect, but to sabotage because they cannot stand watching you become someone who no longer needs them.

That’s the curse. They keep chasing lifestyles, people, looks, and careers, hoping it will somehow fix what is broken inside, but it never does because they are disconnected from their essence. And that is why they will never be able to celebrate your success; they are too haunted by the feeling that they don’t have a real self to celebrate within.
